Vilchis Hardwood Floors has been doing wood floors in Durham since 2009. We’re family-owned, and Carlos (the owner) is the one who’ll show up to give you the estimate and run the crew on your job. We don’t subcontract anything out.
Most of our customers are right here in Durham, but we work all over the Triangle — Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Cary, Raleigh, Wake Forest. New installs, refinishing old floors, fixing water damage, repairing a few bad boards from a furniture mishap — we do all of it.
Call (919) 794-1116 and we’ll come measure and give you a real number. No charge for the estimate.
Hardwood floor installation isn’t hard. It’s just unforgiving. If the subfloor isn’t flat, if the planks didn’t sit in the house long enough before going down, if the wrong nails went in — you won’t see it day one. You’ll see it in six months when there are gaps between boards, or a squeak that wasn’t there, or a section that’s started to lift.
We’ve been doing this since 2009 in Durham. Long enough to know what to check before we start. Long enough to know which corners other guys cut.
Mario is on every job. We use Bostitch nailers and pull moisture readings on the subfloor and the wood before a single board goes down. We sweep up before we leave. None of this should be remarkable. But ask around — it kind of is.
Hardwood costs more upfront than carpet or laminate. That’s the honest truth. But three things make it pay off:
Resale. Realtors in the Triangle consistently report that hardwood adds to a home’s selling price and shortens time on market. Buyers in Durham specifically tend to look for it.
Lifespan. Carpet gets replaced every 8–10 years. Solid hardwood, sanded and refinished, will outlast you. We’ve refinished floors in Durham homes that were installed in the 1950s and they still have plenty of life left.
Humidity. The Triangle’s humidity is rough on cheap flooring. Properly installed and finished hardwood handles it better than laminate, which swells, or vinyl, which can release fumes when it gets hot.
Solid Hardwood Floors can be sanded down and refinished several times during the life of your home. Unlike carpeting, which needs to be replaced periodically, solid hardwood can be refinished, and restained to create new styles.
We can make your floors look new again. Our passion is in hardwood floor installation, refinishing and repairs. Attempting to do this job yourself may lead to damaging your floors beyond repair. We use professional equipment, and years of experience to determine the right way to do each project we undertake.
Refinishing usually makes more sense than replacing. The wood you have is fine — it just needs the top layer taken off. We sand it back to fresh material, fill the bigger gaps, and lay down whatever stain and finish you pick. Three to five days for a normal-sized house, and it’ll cost you a fraction of a full tear-out.
A few things to know going in:
We will work with you. After taking a good look at your floors, we will write up an estimate and explain what needs to be done including any repairs that should occur before refinishing work can start. No matter how old your existing floors are, refinishing will bring out the natural splendor within hours.
If you are thinking about updating your home, refinishing your floors should be your first consideration. We will make your floors look brand new again. If you are looking for a change, let us give them a completely new look and feel by refinishing the surface and restaining with a custom colored stain, saving you time and money that you could have invested on new flooring unnecessarily.
Cupped boards from a leaky dishwasher. A burn mark from a logged-out fireplace screen. A squeaky section your kid found and now jumps on for fun. We replace damaged boards, weave new wood into existing flooring, and color-match the stain so the repair blends in. If a section is past saving, we’ll tell you straight up — it’s not worth refinishing over rotted subfloor.

The first question almost everyone asks is what it costs. The honest answer is “it depends,” but here’s what to expect for the Durham area in 2026:
Solid hardwood installation typically runs $8–$14 per square foot installed, depending on the wood species, board width, and how much prep the subfloor needs. Engineered hardwood is usually a little less. Refinishing existing floors generally lands between $3 and $5 per square foot.
Old houses in Durham — especially anything pre-1960 in Trinity Park, Forest Hills, or Hope Valley — often need extra subfloor work, which adds cost. Newer builds in South Durham and Brier Creek are usually faster. We give written quotes after we see the floor in person, never sight-unseen over the phone.
A typical 1,000 sq ft job takes 2–4 days for the install itself, plus another 1–2 days if we’re staining and finishing on-site. Pre-finished hardwood is faster.
Engineered hardwood, yes. Solid hardwood, not directly — it needs a plywood subfloor. We can build that out for you, or recommend engineered if it’s the better fit. A lot of newer Durham homes have concrete slabs, so this comes up often.
Every 7–15 years for high-traffic homes, less often for low-traffic. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished 4–6 times over its life. Engineered hardwood, depending on the wear layer, usually 1–3 times.
Yes, basic furniture moves are included. We don’t move pianos, gun safes, or anything that needs more than two people — for those we’ll let you know in the quote so you can arrange it.
Yes. Fully licensed and insured in North Carolina. We can send proof of insurance before the job if your HOA or property manager asks.
