Vilchis Hardwood Floors has been installing vinyl flooring in Durham, NC since 2009. We’re family-owned, and Carlos runs every job. LVP (luxury vinyl plank) is the most-installed floor we put down in 2026 — it’s waterproof, takes a beating from kids and dogs, and looks close enough to real wood that most people can’t tell from across the room.
If you’ve been searching “vinyl flooring near me” or “LVP flooring Durham NC,” give us a call at (919) 794-1116. We come out, measure, and email a written quote within a day or two. No charge, no obligation.
We install vinyl plank flooring across the Triangle — Durham, Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Wake Forest. Most jobs are within a 30-minute drive of our shop at 237 Obie Dr in Durham.
LVP stands for luxury vinyl plank. It’s a multi-layer synthetic flooring built in long planks that mimic hardwood. The top layer is a wear coat that handles scratches and scuffs. Underneath that is a printed design layer — the one that makes it look like oak, walnut, hickory, whatever you picked. Below that is the rigid core (usually SPC or WPC), and most products have a built-in foam underlayment on the bottom.
The whole plank is waterproof. You can spill a glass of wine on it, leave it overnight, and wipe it up in the morning with no damage. That’s the thing that converts most of our hardwood customers — they love wood, but they hate worrying about it.
“Vinyl flooring” is the broader category. LVP is one type. LVT (luxury vinyl tile) is the same product cut in tile shapes to look like stone or ceramic. We install both.
The first question most people ask is what it’ll cost. Honest answer: it depends on the product and the prep work. Here’s what to expect in the Durham area for 2026:
Basic LVP runs $4–$6 per square foot installed. That covers the standard 5–6mm planks you’ll see at most big-box stores, plus our labor and basic subfloor prep.
Mid-range LVP runs $6–$8 per square foot installed. Thicker wear layer, better visual realism, longer warranties. This is what most of our Durham customers pick.
Premium LVP runs $8–$10 per square foot installed. 20mil or 30mil wear layer, beveled edges, very convincing wood textures. Worth it in high-end remodels and homes you plan to stay in.
Older homes in Durham — anything pre-1970 in Trinity Park, Forest Hills, or Hope Valley — sometimes need subfloor leveling before vinyl goes down. LVP needs a flat substrate or the planks will rock and the seams will fail. We check this on the estimate and tell you upfront if it’s a factor.
Waterproof. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, mudrooms — anywhere water shows up. Hardwood and laminate can’t compete with LVP here.
Scratch-resistant. Big dogs, dragged chairs, kids on scooters. Not bulletproof, but the wear layer takes a lot before it shows damage.
Triangle humidity. Our summers are rough on cheap flooring. Vinyl doesn’t swell like laminate or cup like solid hardwood when the humidity climbs.
Comfortable underfoot. Warmer than tile, softer than wood. Stand at a kitchen island for an hour and you’ll notice the difference.
Easy to clean. Sweep, damp mop, done. No refinishing, no waxing, no special cleaners.
Affordable. You get the look of hardwood for roughly half the cost installed.
Free in-home estimate. Carlos comes out, measures the rooms, looks at the subfloor, and asks what you want. You get a written quote by email within a day or two.
Material pickup or delivery. We help you pick the product if you haven’t already — there’s a lot of bad LVP out there, and we’ll steer you away from the stuff that fails in two years.
Subfloor prep. This is where most failed vinyl jobs go wrong. We check moisture, level any dips or high spots, and pull old flooring if it’s coming up. LVP can usually go over existing tile, vinyl, or hardwood if it’s flat and solid.
Acclimation. The planks sit in your house for 48 hours before we install. Skipping this is how you end up with gaps in January and buckling in August.
Installation. Most LVP uses a click-lock system — no nails, no glue in the field. We work room by room, cut around obstacles, and lay out the pattern so the seams stagger naturally.
Trim and transitions. Quarter-round, shoe molding, T-strips between rooms. This is the part that makes a job look professional vs. DIY.
Cleanup. We sweep and haul out the trash before we leave. If you want the rest of the house wiped down, our cleaning crew can come through after.
LVP is built in plank shapes to look like wood. It’s the most common vinyl we install — kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, whole-home jobs.
LVT is the same product cut in tile or square shapes to look like stone or ceramic. Common in bathrooms and entryways where people want a tile look without the cold or the grout maintenance.
Sheet vinyl is the old-school stuff — one continuous roll, glued down. Cheap, fully waterproof, but it looks like sheet vinyl. We mostly install it in laundry rooms or rentals where budget is the priority.
Both LVP and LVT are made from the same materials. The choice is purely visual: do you want it to look like wood or like stone?
A lot of vinyl flooring companies in Durham will quote you cheap and finish fast. We’re not the cheapest, and we’re not the fastest. Here’s what we do differently:
We’ve been installing floors in the Triangle since 2009. Sixteen-plus years. Same crew, same standards.
Carlos shows up to your estimate. The owner. Not a salesperson. Not a guy from a call center. He looks at the floor, talks through the options, and gives you the price.
Written quotes. Fixed. You’ll know what the job costs before we start a single thing — none of the “we’ll see when we get into it” surprises.
We don’t subcontract. Mario and the crew on day one are the same guys finishing on day three. We’re responsible for the whole job, start to finish.
We clean up. Our residential cleaning crew can come through after the install and get the dust out of the rest of the house. Most flooring companies in Durham don’t offer that.
Licensed and insured in North Carolina. We send proof to your HOA, property manager, or builder any time you need it.

For 2026, LVP installation in the Durham area generally runs $4–$10 per square foot installed, all in. Standard LVP is $4–$6, mid-range $6–$8, premium $8–$10. The variation comes from the product you pick and how much subfloor prep your house needs. Older Durham homes often need a bit more leveling work. We give you a written, fixed-price quote after a free in-home measurement.
For a typical 1,000 sq ft job, expect 1–2 days for a straightforward install. Larger jobs or homes with tricky subfloor prep can stretch to 3–4 days. Vinyl is one of the faster floor types we install — no nailing, no on-site finishing, no dry time.
Often, yes. LVP can go over tile, sheet vinyl, hardwood, or concrete as long as the existing surface is flat, dry, and solidly attached. We can’t install it over carpet, and we won’t put it over flooring that’s already failing. Carlos checks all of this on the estimate.
Honest answer — it depends on the room and the household. LVP wins in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and homes with big dogs or small kids. Hardwood wins on long-term value and resale, and it looks better in the right setting. A lot of our Durham customers do hardwood in the main living areas and LVP in the wet rooms. We’ll walk through the trade-offs on the estimate.
Yes — the plank itself is waterproof. Water can sit on it and the plank won’t swell or warp. But the seams between planks aren’t fully sealed, so standing water from a flooded dishwasher or a burst pipe can eventually get to the subfloor. For a normal household — kids spilling juice, dogs with wet paws, a wet mop — it handles it without a problem.
Yes. We come to your home, measure, talk through what you want, and email a written quote within a day or two. No charge, no obligation, no pressure to sign that day.
Yes. Fully licensed and insured in North Carolina, with general liability and workers’ comp on every crew member. We send proof of insurance to your HOA, builder, or property manager any time it’s requested.
We bring samples to your home so you can see them in your actual light, next to your actual cabinets and trim. LVP looks completely different on a phone screen than it does in person — don’t pick it online.
