Most people who call us about laminate are trying to get the look of real wood without paying hardwood prices. That’s a fair instinct. Modern laminate copies oak, walnut, and hickory well enough that you usually have to crouch down to tell.
We’ve been installing it in Durham and around the Triangle since 2010. It costs roughly half what hardwood costs, scratches less, and goes down faster. For a house with kids, a couple of dogs, or hallways that just take a beating, it tends to make sense.
A few things worth knowing about us. We’re family-owned. The shop is at 237 Obie Dr in Durham. We don’t sub the work out, so the people you meet at the estimate are the same ones in your house with the planks. Durham, Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Wake Forest — that’s our service area, and most jobs start within two to three weeks once you say go.
Call (919) 794-1116 if you’d rather talk it through. Estimates are free.
Every laminate flooring installation we do in Durham follows the same five-step process. We’ve refined it over hundreds of jobs, and it’s the reason our floors don’t gap, lift, or squeak two years in.
Step 1 — Free in-home estimate.
We come to your house, measure the rooms, look at the existing subfloor, and ask what you’re trying to accomplish. You get a written quote with the labor cost, material cost, and timeline. No deposit required to get the estimate.
Step 2 — Subfloor prep.
This is the step most installers rush. We don’t. We pull up the old flooring, check the subfloor for moisture, level any dips with self-leveling compound, and vacuum the whole space. If the subfloor isn’t right, the laminate above it won’t be either.
Step 3 — Underlayment.
We roll out a quality underlayment — usually a foam or cork product depending on the laminate brand. It quiets the floor, softens the feel underfoot, and acts as a moisture barrier between concrete or plywood and the planks.
Step 4 — Plank installation.
Planks click together row by row. We stagger the seams so they look like real hardwood, leave the right expansion gap around the walls (laminate moves with humidity — Durham summers are no joke), and cut around door frames, vents, and any tricky transitions.
Step 5 — Finish work.
Baseboards or quarter-round go back on, transition strips bridge the laminate to your existing tile or carpet, and we vacuum the whole space. We don’t leave until the room is move-in ready.
Most single-room jobs are done in one day. Whole-floor jobs run two to five days depending on square footage.
Laminate isn’t the right floor for every situation, but when it fits, it really fits. Here’s when our Durham customers usually pick it over the alternatives.
The price.
Hardwood installed in Durham runs $8–$15 per square foot all-in. Laminate runs $3–$8. For a 1,000 sq ft job, that’s a $5,000+ difference. If your budget is tight or you’re prepping a house to sell, the math gets pretty obvious.
It holds up to dogs and kids.
The wear layer on a quality laminate is tougher than the finish on a real hardwood floor. We installed laminate for a family in north Durham with three labs and a toddler. Checked back two years later — still looked new.
Faster install, less mess.
Hardwood needs to acclimate, get nailed or glued down, then sometimes sanded and finished. Laminate is mostly click-lock. No sanding, no fumes, you can walk on it the same day we leave.
The look has come a long way.
Modern laminate copies oak, hickory, walnut, gray washed wood, even stone and tile. Most people who walk into a finished room can’t tell it’s not real wood until they crouch down and look closely.
A few honest tradeoffs worth knowing:
If you’re trying to decide between laminate and the alternatives — hardwood, LVP, or tile — bring it up at the estimate. We’ll tell you what we’d put in our own house.
We install laminate flooring across the whole Triangle from our Durham home base:
If you’re somewhere we didn’t list, call us at (919) 794-1116 — we probably still come out there.
Laminate is one of the easiest floors to live with. A few habits will keep it looking new for 15+ years:
That’s basically it. No refinishing, no sanding, no resealing — that’s the whole reason a lot of Durham homeowners pick laminate in the first place.
Most homeowners in Durham pay between $3 and $8 per square foot installed. The laminate itself runs $1–$4 per sq ft and labor adds $3–$5. The final number depends on room size, the condition of your subfloor, whether you need old flooring removed, and which laminate brand you choose. Our estimates are free, written, and include everything — no surprise add-ons after we start.
A standard 500–800 sq ft room takes us one to two days. Whole-floor jobs of 1,500+ sq ft run three to five days. We give you a real timeline at the estimate, not a guess.
Sometimes. Laminate can go over hardwood, vinyl, tile, or concrete if the surface is flat, dry, and stable. We can’t lay it over carpet, and we won’t put it down on a subfloor with moisture issues — that’s the kind of shortcut that buckles a floor a year later. We check this for you during the free estimate.
Most laminate is water-resistant, not fully waterproof. It handles a spilled glass of water that gets wiped up. For bathrooms, laundry rooms, or homes with pets that have accidents, we usually steer customers toward LVP instead. We install both, so we’re not pushing you one way or the other.
Usually we do that as part of the job. We can remove old carpet, vinyl, or even tile and dispose of it. If you want to save money, you can pull up the old flooring yourself before we arrive — just let us know at the estimate.
We don’t carry our own financing program, but a lot of customers use a home improvement card or HELOC for bigger jobs. Happy to talk through what makes sense for your situation.
We work with all the major brands — Pergo, Mohawk, Shaw, Mannington, plus the big-box-store brands from Home Depot and Lowe’s. If you’ve already bought your laminate, we’ll install it. If you haven’t, we can recommend something based on your budget and where it’s going.
Yes. Our installation work is warrantied, and the laminate itself comes with the manufacturer’s warranty (usually 15–30 years on the wear layer). We give you all the paperwork at the end of the job.
